You may notice that at certain times of the year, you find that you have watery eyes, a runny nose, or that you spend a lot of time sneezing. If so, you may have seasonal allergic rhinitis. This is otherwise known as hay fever or pollenosis.
If you suffer from allergic rhinitis, you may have a lot of trouble when your particular allergen triggers are present. If you have hay fever, you may notice symptoms when you are exposed to pollen including grass pollen. You may also have allergic reactions when you are exposed to other types of pollen. Some people are affected by tree pollen more than grass pollen. If you have hay fever, most often your symptoms will be present just when your allergen is in bloom. Sometimes, people are affected only when the pollen count is very high.
Some people are not affected by pollen, but they are affected by things like pet dander and dust mites which live in dust particles.
When you have a hayfever attack, you develop symptoms because your body is producing a chemical called histamines. When excess histamine is produced in your body, you may notice symptoms which are the body's way of getting rid of the chemical. Over time, the excess production of histamines in your body can lead to a sensitized immune system response. If your body has such a response, it can cause serious side effects.
There are many types of things that can help to control your allergy attacks. In order to help your body to get rid of the histimines, some people take a chemical called an antihistamine. Usually, this is taken by mouth. Other people may take a decongestant to help deal with their allergies. If you do not find relief from any of these oral medicines, your doctor may recomment an intranasal corticosteroids. These medications are usually absorbed through your nasal cavity. If you are particularly itchy steroid cream may help. Steroids can affect your immune system. If you have issues with your immune system, you should inform your doctor if you have such an issue before getting your prescription
Some of these medications can be obtained by purchasing them over the counter at your local drug store. Other times, a prescription is necessary to get some allergy products. If you have questions about a product at the drug store, you can talk to the pharmacist for more information.
If your allergies get worse, or if you develop a secondary infection like a sinus infection due to your allergies, you should talk to your doctor. Your doctor may send you to an allergist in order to get control of your allergies, or he may just be able to change your medication to help you find relief.
