Preventing food intolerance is simple: avoid the foods you are intolerant of. Knowing which foods you cannot tolerate is the key. Read food labels and ask questions about the content of foods at restaurants when ordering.
Food intolerances differ from food allergies in that an intolerance is most likely not life threatening and allergies can be. Signs of intolerance to lactose can include gas, bloating, diarrhea and stomach cramps. All of these symptoms will dissipate when lactose is not consumed. Intolerance to cow milk can be resolved by consuming lactose free milk or soy milk. Babies who are lactose intolerant can be given soy formula.
Signs of fructose intolerance are more serious and can lead to liver failure if fructose is continuously consumed. Fructose intolerance results from the malabsorption of fructose because the person lacks certain digestive enzymes needed to break down the fructose into more simple sugars. Symptoms of fructose intolerance include vomiting, and severe abdominal pain. Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels occur following ingestion of fructose or sucrose. Infants that have fructose intolerance do not eat well, are not interested in eating fruits and generally parents see improvement in their infant’s feeding when given meals that do not contain fructose or other sugars. Giving children who have fructose intolerance sugars continuously, will lead to liver and/or kidney failure and eventually death. Following a fructose free diet will most of the time alleviate all symptoms of fructose intolerance.
You can have a nut intolerance and not a nut allergy. Usually a nut intolerance presents as heartburn or diarrhea and is usually mild. Following a nut free diet will alleviate symptoms. Remember to read labels and avoid consuming foods that are produced in the same factory as nuts.
Approximately half of all people of Asian descent have an alcohol intolerance. This is because they lack the digestive enzyme that turns the alcohol to vinegar or acetic acid. Someone who is alcohol intolerant may experience headache, tachycardia or a fast heart rate, palpitations or feeling your heart pounding in your chest, a feeling of heat and hypotension or low blood pressure. This occurs almost immediately after consuming alcohol as we cannot absorb alcohol without our bodies first converting it to acetic acid for energy. Some people have gluten intolerance. Gluten is a protein composite found in wheat, rye and barley. Symptoms can be as mild as malodorous gas, bloating and malodorous stool to bouts of constipation and diarrhea, hair loss, depression or anxiety and bone density loss. Following a gluten free diet is becoming easier as more grocery stores now have an entire aisle dedicated to gluten free food.
