Erectile Dysfunction (Impotence) Symptoms and Signs
Erectile Dysfunction, otherwise known as impotence, is a sexual health condition where a man is unable to obtain or maintain an erection during sexual intercourse. Normally, when men experience an erection due to sexual arousal, the penis becomes stimulated and it is filled with blood. The penis then contracts, trapping the blood inside for the remainder of the sex act. However, when men experiences impotence, the penis is unable to trap the blood flow which causes the penis to not remain erect. The main symptom of this condition is the inability to gain or maintain the erection. There is usually a decrease in the desire for sexual intercourse as well.
Often, men experience a certain amount of shame if they experience this condition and struggle with admitting to it or seeking help for it. Occasionally, this health condition may make men feel less masculine or manly. However, this condition is extremely treatable as long as the man seeks out medical help. In order to diagnose the condition, men can ask their doctors for blood and urine tests, a physical exam, or an ultrasound which can measure the blood flow to the penis. The blood and urine tests help doctors to find out a man's overall health which can help determine whether or not impotence may be occurring due to any health issues.
Erectile Dysfunction has a variety of known causes including cardiovascular disease, blood vessels that have become clogged and thus do not expand and contract properly, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and tobacco use. There are also a variety of psychological causes including depression, anxiety disorders, and stress. There are also risk factors that might increase a man's chances of experiencing Erectile Dysfunction. Male circumcision and Peyronie's disease both increase the chances of impotence. Peyronie's Disease is basically the development of scar tissue inside the penis which causes a curvature of the organ.
There are a variety of treatment options for Erectile Dysfunction. One of the most common methods is by using medications such as Viagra also known as Sildenafil, Alprostadil, and Levitra otherwise known as Vardenafil. These drugs treat this condition by inhibiting an enzyme known as PDE5 which helps increase blood flow to the penis. In addition to medication, men can decide to fix the problem by receiving an inflatable penile implant which allows the person to manually pump the implant in order to maintain an erection. Men may also choose to purchase a penis pump which has the same effect, but does not require surgery.
There are alternative treatments available as well for those who would prefer not to take medication, use a penis pump, or have surgery. Acupuncture is one particular treatment which is said to be helpful as it reduces psychological factors that sometimes cause impotence. Additionally, taking certain natural herbs such as Gingko, Ginseng, and L-arginine may be medicinal alternatives.
